Unit Five: International Economics

1. Conducted Unit Pre-test on International Economics. Activity: Why Are Some Nations Wealthy? Went over how nations can be "rich or "poor." Assigned Worksheet, which is due Friday. Read Chapter 17-Section 1 by tomorrow.  [5/11]

2. Introduced concepts of Less-Developed Countries (LDCs), More-Developed Countries (MDCs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and international trade organizations. 
Conducted activity, "10 Basic Questions About Globalization."  Homework: read Chapter 17-Sect 2.  
Learning log for week due.  [5/12]

3.  Conducted activity ("Hey, Hey. . .Why Do We Need the WTO?") that introduces what several NGOs and international trade organizations do to help LDCs. Students took that information, located in a distributed packet, to complete a table of what the roles of these institutions are and which ones fill those roles. This table is due on Thursday. Read Chapter 17-Section 3.  [5/15]

4. Chapter 17 Quiz. Finished activity from Friday. Read Ch. 18-Section 1.  [5/16]

5. Conducted activity (Economic Sanctions and U.S. Foreign Policy), Packet (especially Activity 14.3) is due when we come back from winter break on January 4th. Went over Unit 4 exam. [5/17]


6. Learned about the founding and the purposes of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Given case studies of five nations that sought help from the IMF in the 1990s, completed worksheet addressed the problems, solutions,and results for these countries--due tomorrow. Read Chapter 18-Sections 2 & 3. [5/18]

End of Unit 5: International Economics.
































Broke into five groups, each of which got the answers to two (2) oif the Basic Questions of Globalization, and were directed to summarize each answer on a sheet of butcher paper for display in the classroom. Once group was done with its display and had posted it on the blackboard, students conducted a Gallery Walk by going to each question and writing the answer on their study guide, which was due at the end of class today.
Learned about the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NAFTA). Distributed article describing the arguments for the creation of NAFTA and the arguments against. Using this information, complete the Pros/Cons chart by Friday. 


6. Watched video, "Planet Finance," on international finance from The Ascent of Money. Took notes for entry slip: What are 10+ Things Learned while watching the video.  [5/19]
7. Finished watching "Planet Finance," taking notes, debriefing, and submitting an entry slip: 5+ Things Learned. Distributed Discussion Topic #1 readings for Unit 6. Read the articles and complete a Checking for Understanding worksheet for one of them documents, which will be due Monday. Be ready to discuss and debate the chosen topic on Monday.  [5/20]
