Unit Three: Banking and Finance
1. Introduced the topic of money. That is, went over what the properties of money are, what the functions of money are, and what are the types of money (found in Chapter 10--Sections 1 and 2). Conducted Current Events quiz from Friday. Assignment: read Chapter 10--Section 3. [10.22]
2. Introduction to banking, specifically fractional banking, by reading excerpts from the memoirs of Gus Mahler--the story of Pine Gulch. Read the story in class, finished reading the story with a partner, then completing a study guide that goes with the reading, which is due on Thursday. [10/23]
3, Go over the history of banking in the United States via Power Point Presentation. (Outline can be found here.) Assignments: Read Chapter 10-Section 3; and prepare entry slip for today's topic by answering this prompt: "What was the most important thing you learned about today? Why was it important to you? [10/24]
4. Go over the differences between savings and investments. (See summary here.) Discussed best way to make money grow, talked about the Rule of 72. Talked about the various innovations in banking since the 1980s. Assignments: Rule of 72 packet, due Monday; read Chapter 11--Sections 1 and 2. [10/25]
